Reframing Aging - Keynote speaker: Dr. Julie Sweetland

What is the best way to reframe aging that taps into the power of purpose for older adults? FrameWorks Institute seeks to advance the nonprofit sector’s communications capacity by narrowing the gap between what professionals know and what the public understands. They conduct research that helps to “frame” public discourse in ways that advance understanding. In 2015 FrameWorks was the winner of the McArthur Foundation Award for Creative and Effective Institutions. In collaboration with FrameWorks Institute, eight of the nation’s leading aging-focused organizations have formed an unprecedented partnership to create a better public understanding of older adults’ needs and contributions to society — and subsequently to improve the lives of all people as they age. This coalition includes AARP, the American Federation for Aging Research, the American Geriatrics Society, the American Society on Aging, The Gerontological Society of America, Grantmakers in Aging, the National Council on Aging, and the National Hispanic Council on Aging. This session will explore the results of this exciting collaboration!

A2 - Session Title: Recruiting, Engaging, and Retaining Tomorrow’s Workforce

Speaker: Todd Andrews, Regional Vice President, Sodexo Seniors

A trained and engaged workforce is the foundation for providing quality services for older adults. While many employees are drawn to careers in senior living because of their passion for providing and serving in this industry, it is clear there are demographic challenges and significant competition facing areas of this sector. Recruiting, engaging, and retaining a workforce equipped to meet these challenges in the coming years will be a key to meeting the future needs of older adults. This session will focus on tactics to drive better outcomes in all three areas--recruitment, engagement and retention of today’s ever challenging workforce.

A3 - Getting your papers in order!

Speaker/Facilitator: Samantha Schiffman, LGSW, Care Services Coordinator at Capitol Hill Village

It all began when one DC resident was the executor for her parent’s estate, and she discovered what a big help it would have been if all her parent’s documents were in one place. So, she created what she calls The Red Book, which contains her important documents, and set out to spread what she learned. Capitol Hill Village staff and members will explain how CHV devised an initiative to help members carry out the task, which often seems overwhelming. An information meeting was held, and members were encouraged to organize in small groups. Through these groups, members have inspired one another, shared information, and helped each other identify what they need to do. As a result of the initiative, CHV members have made strides in organizing documents, and CHV has helped create understanding of sticky issues such as wills vs. trusts and setting up beneficiaries for accounts. They knew they were on the right track when Washington Post columnist Thomas Heath wrote a series of columns on the same subject—he called it The Big Book.

BREAKOUT SESSIONS B – 10:45 – 11:45 am

Continuing Education: LADC has applied for 1.0 NAB, NASW, DCBoNursing for all breakouts sessions

B1 - If You Want to Change the World, Start Off by Making Your Bed

Speaker: Roger Randall, Senior Vice President, BB&T

During Admiral William H. McRaven's (U.S. Navy Ret.) commencement address to the University of Texas, he advised the graduating class of 2014 "If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed." For senior living providers, the world continues to change, for better or worse, on a daily basis. How can your organization prepare itself to pro-actively respond to this change? How can providers become the change they want to see in the world? The Admiral's advice is the road map to tackle these seemingly insurmountable challenges - you can only make pro-active strategic decisions when your organization is ready and able to do so. It is difficult to be strategic, when your organization can only look-out as far ahead as tomorrow. Therefore, we will discuss what “being prepared” looks like and how to get there. Then we will explore well-defined, flexible processes to position your organization to thrive. Using real-word examples and an interactive format, attendees will leave with the knowledge they need to act confidently in our dynamic world.

B2 – IGNITE: A Revolution in Resident Engagement

Speaker: Devin Kassi, PT, DPT, Healthcare Consultant, Gravity Healthcare Consulting and Rob Liebreich - Executive Director at Asbury Methodist Village

The next level of revolution for resident engagement has arrived! Gravity Healthcare Consulting in partnership with Asbury and Asbury Methodist Village have created IGNITE, a progressive Resident Engagement Program that has innovative concepts to keep seniors productive and connected to their families, friends, and community. The goal of this program is to encourage skilled residents and their families to actively explore and participate in various person – specific activities involving socialization, cognition, and activity that is available in addition to the resident’s plan of care. IGNITE uses a customized technology platform to boost participation in recommended functional tasks, cognitive challenges and specialized activities along with excellence in clinical care and customer service. The result of a truly integrated, interdisciplinary approach is superior outcomes and stellar customer satisfaction, all while reducing or maintaining length of stay as clinically indicated.

B3 - Trauma-Informed Care: Practical Implications

Speaker: Karen Key, President and CEO, Heller Key Management Consulting, Jill Schumann, President and CEO, LeadingAge Maryland

Traumatic experiences can affect the physiology as well as the behaviors and reactions of survivors. This session will explore the current understanding of trauma and the ways in which it may manifest in older adults. Trauma-informed care is the standard of practice in other fields and there is much for aging services to learn. Phase 3 of the CMS Requirements of Participation requires that by November 2019 all nursing homes will practice trauma-informed care using the SAMHSA framework. Policies and procedures need to be developed; training needs to be conducted at many levels; supportive behavioral health services need to be in place; and internal champions must be cultivated. The principles of trauma-informed care have profound implications for all staff members and for the organizational culture. This session will explore the “nuts and bolts” of implementing trauma-informed care and introduce participants to tools and resources that can help.
